NYC’s most popular baby names
October 14, 2007
For all the expecting New Yorkers out there, here’s a list that should help you decide what not to name your newborn child.
New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene released the city’s most popular baby names for 2006. Here are the top three girls and boys names both citywide and by ethnicity.
Citywide
| Girls | Boys |
|---|---|
| Ashley | Michael |
| Emily | Daniel |
| Isabella | Matthew |
By Ethnicity
Girls
| Hispanic | Black | White | Asian & Pacific Islander |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ashley | Kayla | Sarah | Emily |
| Emily | Madison | Rachel | Sophia |
| Isabella | Jada | Ava | Chloe |
Boys
| Hispanic | Black | White | Asian & Pacific Islander |
|---|---|---|---|
| Angel | Joshua | Michael | Ryan |
| Christopher | Jayden | Joseph | Jason |
| Justin | Justin | Daniel & Matthew | Kevin |
There seems to be a trend here: Are Hispanics having more baby girls than any other ethnicity, and are Whites having more boys? Hmmm.
Update:
The Times went a bit further in their investigation (as they should) and discovered that the most popular boy name in New York City is, in fact, Jayden.
It fails to reach the No.1 spot because of the different ways it’s spelled: Jayden, Jaden, Jaiden, Jaydin, Jaeden, Jaydon and Jadyn.
I’m sure this has nothing to do with Will Smith’s kid.
